A Year with The Dimpled Series

11/13/2015

I had the good fortune of spending this past year fishing Len Thompson’s Dimpled Series for a variety of freshwater and saltwater fish species. After catching and releasing over 300 fish with the lure, I’m convinced it performed well above anyone’s expectations.

In the Shallows (2-15 feet)

There is no doubt the high quality, hand painted finish of the Dimpled Series lures attracted many of the shallow water pike and trout I caught throughout the year, especially in stained water and during low light conditions. The lure was easy to cast long distances and retrieve over top of a wide variety of underwater structures. The lures flash and vibration  triggered bites from fish in both positive and negative feeding patterns.

I also really liked how the Dimpled Series lures include  a single Eagle Claw hook. The ease of changing out the treble hook for the (provided) single hook made the lure ideal for fishing pike in shallow water weed beds. This allows an angler to save time removing weeds from his or her hook and spend more time catching fish.
Mid-Depths (15-30 feet)

The lures flash provoked bites from several different trout species including lake trout living in deeper water structures. However, at these depths I believe the vibration the lure gives off played a key role in many of my hookups. Pike sitting on deeper structures also couldn’t resist the lure but where the combination of flash and vibration really convinced me was fishing suspended walleye ranging from 20 to 28 feet of water. On three different lakes/reservoirs, I found walleye on my fishfinder suspended at this depth cruising for baitfish. I trolled or casted a Dimpled Series lure past the suspended walleye and brought the lure through the area fast enough to create a vibration but slow enough to keep the lure in the strike zone and. The results were positive and I was rewarded with consistent reaction strikes on all three waterbodies.

Deep Water (70–120 feet)

I had the good fortune of fishing salmon on the west coast of BC, with Serengeti Fishing Charters this summer. I also targeted monster lake trout in northern SK, at Selwyn Lake Lodge. At  both locations for both species we were fishing 70 feet of water or deeper. At these depths light penetration is minimal to non-existent and I believe the lures incredible vibration became the number one attractant to the large predator fish that live at these depths.

To maximize the flash and noise,  I experimented a little. I attached two Dimpled lures with a swivel in the middle (comes with the #16) and removed the hook on the #13. This allowed the #16 to spin and create even more vibration. It worked like a charm.
The Dimpled Series hooked into more than 30 salmon and lake trout over 20 pounds without issue. The Eagle Claw hooks withstood the pressure of fighting these large fish from as deep as 120 feet of water and over the course of the year, I never had to change a bent hook and rarely had to sharpen a hook.

I look forward to fishing this great lure again next season but can’t wait to jig it beneath the ice this winter to some unsuspecting fish.

Good article, I've become a fan of using single hooks when fishing around weeds, but changing out the hooks on the original series without changing the action can involve some experimenting. The dimpled series is the easiest answer to this problem.
